Coming from different bands, the trio came together and formed their own group in 2011. Iain Cook (synthesizers, bass, guitar, vocals) came from the band Aerogramme and The Unwinding Hours, Martin Doherty (vocals, synthesizers and sampler) from The Twilight Sad, and Lauren Mayberry (lead vocals, sythesizers and samplers) was from Girlfriend / Boyfriend and Blue Sky Archives.
Although pronounced as 'churches', their name has nothing to do with any religious speculations. It was simply because they liked it. They also have to use the letter "v" instead of "u" to avoid confusions from actual church constitutions.
